Organic, Vegan, and Vegetarian FoodWebsites where you can find information and recipes and/or buy specialized items for vegans, vegetarians, and those interested in organic food: Adding Herbs to Your Table This site has a treasure chest of information about growing and using herbs. Includes herbal teas and recipes using fresh herbs. Bulk Foods A great site for bulk candies, nuts, and "healthy snacks." It lists 58 kinds of nuts, 63 kinds of dried fruits, and 30 kinds of grains and cereals. I will say nothing of the bulk candies, except to mention 38 kinds of licorice. Which means nothing to the average person, but if you're a fellow licorice lover, confined to bare pickings (Good and Plenties) for years and years because other people don't UNDERSTAND you, this site is heaven. Farmers' Markets The USDA lists farmers' markets across the U.S. If you know of one that isn't in their directory, please let them know. Fat-Free Recipes They say, "This archive has 4,667 fat free and very low fat vegetarian recipes as well as information about healthy very low fat vegetarian diets. But you don't have to be vegetarian or eat low fat all the time to enjoy one of these recipes. Browse and enjoy!" I'm not a vegetarian, but I'm a sucker for low-fat recipes. I shall return. Green People They call it "the world's largest directory of eco-friendly products."
Local Harvest Do you want fresh, locally grown, and/or organic food, but don't know where to find it? The LocalHarvest map makes it easy to find family farms, farmers' markets and other sources of sustainably grown food in your area. Just click on the map on their site. They also have an online store selling organic products of all kinds. Moosewood Restaurant The Moosewood cookbooks began back when most people thought vegetarians became pale and limp and thin and gradually rotted, like celery left too long in the refrigerator. Now Moosewood healthy food products are big business. The site describes their most recent food items, coming soon to a store near you, and also has some great recipes. Vegetarian. But you knew that. Natural Food Hub They say, "Use this hub to locate retail, local, farm gate, or mail-order supplies of genuine unprocessed food fit for an omnivorous animal come to town. The accent is on fresh and safe, and it doesn't necessarily mean 'organic'." The site includes information about m--t, but that is easily avoided. They list sources in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Personal Favorites This website is a personal collection of vegetarian recipes, many of them Chinese in origin, and they all sound great. Rawganique They mostly sell hemp products, but they also sell raw food products and raw cuisine equipment. Recognizing Wild Edible Plants A good site but, as they say, no substitute for learning to recognize plants from a knowledgeable guide.
Registered Dietitian A vegan dietitian with a master's degree in public health answers readers' questions. Susan's Vegetarian Bookmarks This site has so many links of help and interest to vegans and vegetarians that I will not even try to list them. Visit it for yourself. It's a treasure! The Vegetarian Kitchen of Nava Atlas The site includes articles, kid-friendly recipes, a bookstore selling her many cookbooks, vegetarian forums, and "recipes galore." Vegan Catalog A mail-order catalog for soy foods and other vegan ingredients. They even have vegetarian pet food! (Or has it been around for years and I just didn't know?) Vegan Forum An independent vegan message board. Vegan Information Recipes, newsletter, and list of sites of interest to vegans. Also, opportunities for vegan belly dancers. Vegetarian Journal The publishers of this print journal call it "the practical magazine for those interested in Vegetarian Health, Ecology, and Ethics." In addition to recipes, you can find here reliable nutrition information for vegans, travel guides for both the U.S. and Europe, and helps for raising vegan or vegetarian children. Veg Web More than 5,000 recipes for vegetarians or vegans, along with witty commentary and even a "personals" section where you might meet the vegan of your dreams. Wildman Learn about "edible and medicinal wild plants and mushrooms, nature, and ecology" from New York wild man Steve Brill. He's on radio and TV and was, at least once, in the pokey. Caught in the act: of ruining the ecology of New York City by devouring one of its wild onions. Newspapers call him "The Man Who Ate Manhattan." |
