    Food Coupons

How to save money using on-line food coupons. The material in this section comes from an article, "How Penny-Pincher Susan Samtur Cut Her Grocery Bill By 75%: You Can Too, in the August 1,2004 issue of Bottom Line/Personal. You can subscribe to this excellent print newsletter at http://BottomLineSecrets.com/. Its website also has much valuable health and financial information.

Ms. Samtur says, "On-line coupons have a greater average face value (97 cents/coupon) than store coupons and a longer average time until expiration (4.8 months versus three months). There are many discount sources, so it's easy to be overwhelmed. Some require you to provide your name and e-mail address. To save time, bookmark a few Web sites that you'll use regularly.

"Coupon Clearinghouses. These offer coupons from many manufactures. Print and use them when you shop. If you have time, visit several sites -- one may offer bigger discounts than another for the same product. Best sites . . .

"Retail Savings Sites. Some of these sites feature savings at Old Navy, Eddie Bauer, and Payless ShoeSource, among other stores . . .

"Manufacturers' Web Sites. Look on the packages of favorite products for the manufacturer's Web site. See if the site offers promotions, coupons, and/or rebates. A few that are particularly generous:

"Discount Codes For On-Line Shopping. Since the purpose of a discount code is to attract buyers to on-line stores, you may find them on sites other than the ones where the coupons will be used. Sites with generous coupon codes and promotions . . .

"Manufacturers' Rebates. Some retailers have taken the hassle out of getting maufacturers' rebates. Simply register at their Web sites -- for example, www.riteaid.com, www.walgreens.com, www.truevalue.com, and www.officemax.com. When you make an eligible purchase at one of these stores, enter the transaction number from your receipt. The manufacturer will mail you a check in four to six weeks. These rebates can total more than $100 a month, so check back frequently.

"Double and Triple Your Savings. I try to combine discounts from different sources. I'm able to get many products for free or close to it because I create "triple plays," combining savings from store sales, newspaper coupons, and Web sites.

"Example: A 12-pack of Pepsi was advertised at my local supermarket for $2. A rebate sticker on the cans offered $10 back if I mailed in proofs of purchase for three 12-packs and three bags of Lay's potato chips. I purchased the three bags on sale for $5, less 75 cents off because I used three 25-cent coupons that I found on the Frito-Lay Web site. Final cost for the soda and chips: 25 cents: $10.25 minus the $10 rebate.

"I love "double coupons." If I had made my purchases using double coupons at the supermarket, the soda and chips would have cost me nothing."
